Midges
Midge larvae, pupae and adults are found in all types of water year round. Even though they are small, the large number found in the drift offer the trout a steady supply of food when other insects are not available. Any time of the year you will be able to catch a trout on a midge pupae pattern.
One of the things we hear so often from anglers visiting the San Juan for the first time is how small the midges are compared to their home waters. You won't run across anything bigger than size 22, but most often 24's & 26's will be abundant, and at times even 28's & 30's (micro midges) will take more fish.
