Also know as the Bubble Back Midge, the clear bead on the back simulates the air bubble that helps a midge pupa rise to the surface to emerge. This is a great pattern when you see fish rolling on emergers just under the surface. You'll often get a solid take as you give your drifting nymph rig a slow lift of the rod tip just in front of where you spot a feeding fish.
